What Vehicles Are Covered by Trucking Insurance?

Truckers have unique insurance needs. State and local regulations require semi-trucks to have minimum amounts of commercial auto liability insurance coverage.

Due to their size, accidents involving commercial vehicles—especially semi-trucks—are often more complex than those involving regular cars. Semi-trucks are usually on the road more frequently and for longer periods. There are specific licenses, registrations and insurance requirements for operating them.

What Defines a Commercial Vehicle?

A vehicle is classified as a commercial vehicle when it is used for business purposes. This broad definition includes fleet vehicles, company cars, semi-trucks and other business-use vehicles that meet any of the following criteria:

  • Company ownership—The vehicle belongs to a company or corporation. White Van Parked In Front of a Building
  • Business use—The vehicle belongs to an individual but is used for business purposes.
  • Leased vehicles—The vehicle is leased and in the name of the institution that owns it.
  • Weight class—The vehicle exceeds a particular weight class.
  • Hazardous materials—The vehicle is used to haul hazardous materials.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires certain types of vehicles to have compliant trucking insurance. These vehicles typically include the following:

  • For-hire carriers—Operators who transport passengers or haul cargo for interstate commerce
  • Private carriers—Businesses that use commercial vehicles to transport their own goods across state lines
  • Freight forwarders—Companies involved in arranging the transportation of cargo
  • Hazardous materials carriers—Vehicles transporting hazardous materials, which require additional safety permits and insurance endorsements

These requirements ensure that carriers have adequate coverage to protect against liabilities and maintain safety standards on the road.
